Selinunte was an ancient Greek city located on the southwest coast of Sicily, today it is the largest archaeological park in Europe. The ruins of the city are located on the territory of the municipality of Castelvetrano, in the southern part of the province of Trapani. In the archaeological site, on the acropolis there are some temples along with other secondary buildings, while other temples are located on a hill not far away.
The name Selinunte derives from the Greek SèlinonSi distinguish three zones. The first, on the eastern hill, groups three large temples, one of which was raised in 1957. The second, on the western hill and surrounded by walls, is the Acropolis, to the north of which stood the city proper.
To the west of the Acropolis, beyond the river Modione, there was another sacred area between them and sanctuaries, since it is not known for sure who the temples were dedicated to, the scholars have marked them with the letters of the alphabet.
To complete the visit it would be desirable to visit the Cusa Quarries, from which come the blocks used to build the temples, Eastern Temples - The first to appear is the Temple E, recomposed in 1957. Dedicated to Hera, dates back to the 5th century . B.C. and had a complex plant. It was accessed from the eastern side through some steps that led, beyond the colonnade, to the pronaos, preceded by two columns of which only the capitals remained, on the ground, Acropolis, starting from the parking lot in front of the entrance to the Eastern Temples, continue until at the next parking lot. It stretched on a hill, beyond a depression called Gorgo Cottone, from the name of the river that once ran there and that housed, at the mouth, the port of the city, then buried. Walled since the Vl-V century B.C. he followed the classical scheme of the Hippodamean city, with three arteries intersecting at right angles, intersected in turn at 90 ° by smaller roads, The temples - Ascending we see the ruins of the temple A. Inside, in the wall of entrance to the naos, there were two spiral staircases, the oldest so far known. The ruins, however, are dominated by the 14 of the 17 columns of the temple C, raised in 1925. Probably dedicated to Apollo or Heracles. It is the most ancient of the Temples of Selinunte VI sec. a.c. The fortifications, along the major decumanus, reach the back wall of the Acropolis. What we see today is the fortification following the destruction of 409, Sanctuary of the Malophoros. To reach it, follow the path that constitutes the continuation of the main line on the left of the major decumanus. The sanctuary erected in honor of Demetra Malophoros, goddess of vegetation and therefore protector of farmers, stood inside a sacred Temenos enclosure on the other bank of the river Modione, a maritime port and emporium of the city, the archaeological area of Selinunte consists of 'Acropolis, from the Eastern Hill, from the Contrada Manuzza plateau, from the Sanctuary of the Malophoros in the Gaggera district and from two Necropolises.
